Bath is a quirky, undulating track in Somerset that suits certain horses down to the ground — and on that day, this horse was clearly in its element. That was 19 months ago now, and the subsequent form has been mixed: the recent run of 11-5-7-3-1 (reading from most recent to oldest) shows a horse that won impressively on debut, placed a couple of times, then drifted — finishing seventh and then, most recently, first again in the sequence as you read back. What that sequence actually tells us is that The Green Mile has gone from a winning debut, through some promising placed efforts, and has recently been finding things harder.

Whether another win is close may depend on finding conditions that suit — the right distance, the right track — and Bath, where it has already proved itself, might just be the place to watch for.
