Newton Abbot is a tight, turning track in Devon that suits horses with a certain nimbleness, and it clearly suited this one. The fact that the win happened just 12 months ago, and that Testflight is still actively racing — the last run was just yesterday — means there is every reason to think another day like that one is possible.

The horse is trained by Sue Gardner at Longdown in Devon, a yard that has sent out seven winners this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get a horse ready to win. Most of Testflight's races, 24 of them, have come at Class 5 level — the entry-level tier of British racing — with just that one win to show from those outings, a rate of roughly one in every 24 attempts at that grade. It is a modest return, but the recent form tells a slightly more encouraging story: in the last six races, Testflight has finished third, third, fourth, third, fourth, and fifth. No wins, but consistently competitive — always in the conversation, never falling away.

The most regular partner in the saddle has been Lucy Gardner, who has ridden Testflight eight times without a victory between them. That partnership has yet to find the combination that produces a result, but given how close Testflight has been running lately, it may only be a matter of time before they find themselves in the right place on the right afternoon. For a nine-year-old with one win and thirty races behind it, the fact that anyone is still watching closely is itself a small kind of achievement.
