Testflight

The pattern becomes clearer in recent months. After winning at Newton Abbot on 18 September — just four weeks ago — Testflight has been kept active, racing again last week. The last six runs tell a story of a horse that can still finish in the mix: a win, a second, a fifth, two fourths, and a third-place finish. Not spectacular, but far from broken. Susan Gardner, the trainer, has kept the horse in work and in the frame, which suggests belief that there is more racing to come.

The weak link is partnership with jockey Lucy Gardner, under whom Testflight has raced 8 times without a win. This is not yet damning — small sample sizes can mislead — but it hints that something might click better with a different rider on a day when everything aligns. For a horse this persistent, Newton Abbot has become a realistic hunting ground. Testflight may never be a multiple-winner, but it is a horse that understands a particular track and performs there above its usual level. In racing, that kind of edge, however narrow, is worth noting.
