The level at which Tequila Star competes tells its own story. Class 5 is among the more modest grades of racing in Britain, and even there the horse has gone 0 from 4, which suggests it is finding things difficult wherever it lines up. A win rate of zero from 11 career races is genuinely hard to put a positive spin on — in simple terms, it has never won a race.

What keeps this interesting is that Tequila Star is still only three years old and was racing just yesterday, meaning the story is very much still being written. The yard behind the horse, trained by Dominic Ffrench Davis out of Lambourn in Berkshire, has sent out 12 winners this season, so this is not a stable short on knowhow. Lambourn is one of the most established training centres in the country, and a yard posting 12 winners in a season is clearly functioning well — it is just that Tequila Star has not yet been the one to contribute to that tally. Whether improvement is around the corner, only time will tell, but at three years old there is at least still time for that corner to arrive.
