The recent form offers a little hope, though not much. A second-place finish four runs ago is the highlight, sandwiched between a pair of twelfth-place efforts and a pulled-up run — that dash in the form figures meaning the horse did not finish. Jockey A P Heskin has had six chances to find the combination that works, but they are yet to trouble the judge together, finishing unplaced every time. That kind of record between horse and rider can sometimes point to a change being needed.

Technology competes mostly at Class 4 level, which represents the bread-and-butter tier of racing — not the top events, but competitive enough that a horse needs genuine ability to win. Seven races at that level, zero wins, suggests the horse is finding even that standard a stretch. Trainer John C McConnell is no mug — his yard at Stamullen in County Meath has sent out 36 winners this season, so it is not a lack of training quality holding Technology back. The horse raced just yesterday, meaning the yard are keeping it active and looking for that elusive breakthrough.

At nine years old, time is not on Technology's side. Most horses of this age have either found their niche or quietly faded from the scene. There is something almost admirable about a horse that keeps turning up, keeps placing occasionally, and keeps falling just short — but admirable does not pay the bills. Until the form figures show a number one at the front, Technology remains a horse that tries hard and finishes places, which in racing is only half the story.
