What makes Tatterstall genuinely interesting is his pattern. He thrives at shorter distances and on normal ground, which are the conditions where his trainer thinks he belongs. On standard going, the horse has won 2 of his 4 races — a 50 per cent win rate that stands out sharply against his overall 20 per cent record. He does not like soft or muddy ground, which as his trainer noted, limits where the team can race him, but also tells you something valuable: on days when the track suits him, he runs his best race. He won his breakthrough race at Wolverhampton in May 2023, then came back with a Class 2 victory at Goodwood in July 2024, the kind of top-tier race that confirms he is no plodder.

Connor Beasley has ridden him often enough — winning 3 of 15 races together — to have worked out what makes him tick. When Beasley partnered him to that Goodwood win, Dods's daughter and stable manager noted that Tatterstall "battled back," the kind of phrase trainers use for horses that fight when it matters. His record since then shows mixed form; he has run out of the placings once in six runs, but has also placed in four of those races. For a six-year-old at his level, staying sound and racing weekly shows genuine durability. He is still active, still winning when conditions align, and that Lingfield victory this week suggests he has not been emptied yet.
