Ralph has been candid about Tao Enki's journey. The horse was notoriously difficult to break in and arrived at the track as green as they come — meaning raw, easily distracted, and still figuring out what racing actually asks of it. That kind of horse often takes longer to find its feet, and the fact that it raced at all in those early days is something of an achievement in itself. Ralph's view, expressed earlier this year, is that Tao Enki still has plenty of improvement to come and could eventually compete at a higher level than you'd expect from its results so far. That's a significant thing for a trainer to say about a horse that hasn't won a single race.

Context matters here too. Ralph's yard has been in good form this season — 25 winners and counting — which suggests this isn't a stable simply hoping for the best. When a trainer with that kind of output says he really likes a horse, it's worth paying attention. Tao Enki raced just one day ago and is clearly being kept active, which points to a team that believes conditions and experience will eventually click into place. Whether that belief turns out to be justified is the interesting question — but for now, this is a horse carrying more expectation under the surface than its record alone would ever suggest.
