Talking Tough

The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. Finishing 11th and 15th in two of its last six outings before a pair of runs where it failed to complete — marked simply as dashes in the record — suggests a horse that is finding things harder rather than easier as time goes on. The two more recent efforts of 7th and 8th are marginally more respectable, but in the context of a career without a single win, they do little to shift the overall picture.

Chris Hayes has been the regular partner, riding Talking Tough in all six of those recorded recent races together, and the pair have yet to trouble the judge. Zero wins from six races as a combination is not a crisis on its own — jockeys and horses sometimes simply need time to click — but when the horse itself has never won in 44 races, the statistics start to feel less like bad luck and more like a pattern.

What keeps Talking Tough's story from being purely dispiriting is the sheer volume of the effort. Forty-four races is a lot of early mornings, a lot of parade rings, a lot of hope. The team clearly believes there is something worth persisting with, and at 9 years old, the horse is still being asked the question — it raced just one day ago, which means this is very much an active campaign rather than a story winding down. Whether that elusive first win ever arrives is genuinely uncertain, but one thing is not: Talking Tough has earned its name simply by showing up, again and again, and going around once more.
