Talk In The Park

The most recent form tells a familiar story: a fourth-place finish four days ago, followed earlier by runs that produced fourth, fifth and second-place efforts. It is the kind of pattern you see in horses that jump better or run better on specific ground conditions, and indeed Talk In The Park performs noticeably better on normal ground, winning two of nine races there — roughly a one-in-five record — compared to the bare 7% win rate across all conditions. That surface preference is real enough to matter, but not enough to have brought recent luck. Danny Mullins, who rides the horse most often, has never managed a win from six attempts together, which may or may not be significant in a sport where timing and fortune matter as much as partnership.

Trained by Ross O'Sullivan at Kilcullen in County Kildare, Talk In The Park runs for a yard in good form this season with 40 winners to its name. It is a yard that clearly knows how to train winners across a range of horses, which makes the long drought without a third victory all the more poignant. At eight years old, the horse is approaching the later stages of its career, and with so little success in recent seasons, the window for a return to the winner's circle is narrowing. Still, the horse races on regularly and shows enough fight to earn places, which at least suggests it remains a willing competitor in whatever races its trainer chooses.
