Phillip Enright has been the one making that journey in vain more often than anyone, riding Syracus Du Houx in ten of those fourteen races without a single win to show for it. That is a loyalty — or perhaps a stubbornness — that racing partnerships are built on, though at some point the numbers start to speak for themselves. Two places from fourteen races means this horse finishes in the top three roughly once every seven outings, which is thin pickings at any level.
Trained by Oliver McKiernan out of Rathcoole in County Dublin, the horse raced just yesterday, so it is firmly in the thick of another campaign. McKiernan's yard has sent out four winners this season, which shows the operation is capable of getting horses to the line first — just not this one, at least not yet. Recent form figures of 7-11-7 tell the same story the career record does: present, plugging away, but not troubling the judge. For a horse that has now had fourteen chances to break its duck, the question stops being "when will it win?" and starts being "what does winning look like for this horse?" Sometimes a place, a clear round, or simply another day out is what a yard is working towards — and on that measure, Syracus Du Houx keeps showing up.
