Sweet Nightingale

Last week, Sweet Nightingale won at Exeter — and that result did not come out of nowhere. Look at the last six runs and you see a horse that has finished third, third, third, and third before that victory arrived. Four placings on the bounce is the calling card of a horse that is running consistently well, travelling into races in good shape, and just waiting for the right moment. When that moment came at Exeter on 22 March, Sweet Nightingale delivered. That is not luck — that is form holding up under pressure.

The conditions matter here too. On normal ground, Sweet Nightingale has won 2 of 12 races — roughly 1 in every 6, which is a meaningfully better record than the overall career average. That is not a coincidence; it suggests a horse that moves most fluently when the surface underfoot is neither waterlogged nor baked hard. Trainers and owners pay close attention to details like that when deciding where and when to run.

Sweet Nightingale is trained by Polly Gundry, who runs a small yard out of Ottery St Mary in Devon. Four winners from the stable this season is a solid return for an operation of that size, and the Exeter win last week will have felt particularly satisfying — Exeter is practically a local track for the Gundry yard, and the team know how to place their horses around the West Country circuit. The fact that Sweet Nightingale has never won at Class 4 level in 10 attempts — the level just above where most of these wins have come — tells you where the horse's ceiling probably sits. But at the level where it does compete, and on the right ground, it remains a genuine contender. At nine years old and in form, there may still be another win or two in this horse yet.
