She is trained by Jessica Macey out of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, and the yard is in decent form this season with 13 winners already on the board. That suggests the horses coming out of this stable are fit and ready to run, which makes Suzie May's results so far more a reflection of where she is in her development than any wider problems with the operation. Two-year-olds are notoriously hit and miss — some take to racing immediately, others need several runs before the penny drops. Suzie May is very much still in the learning phase.

The most interesting thing to watch for next time is whether that fourth-place finish — her best effort — is a sign of gradual improvement. If she can build on that and start creeping closer to the front, a first win may not be far away. For now, she is a work in progress, but she is young, active, and in a yard that clearly knows how to get horses winning.
