Supreme George

What changed is hard to say for certain from the record alone, but the numbers tell their own story: when this horse gets conditions that suit him, he delivers.

Those conditions, it turns out, are fairly specific. Shorten the trip and that confidence evaporates. He also has a particular love for Catterick Bridge, a tight, undulating track in North Yorkshire, where he has won twice from three visits. The puzzle in his record is his partnership with jockey Brian Hughes, one of the most respected jump jockeys in the north of England. Hughes has ridden Supreme George eight times without a single win between them — 0 from 8. That is striking given Hughes's overall quality, and it raises the obvious question of whether the horse simply performs better with someone else in the saddle, or whether the races Hughes has ridden him in have simply not suited. Either way, his three wins this season have come with different riders, and that is a detail worth noting.

McCain's yard is in excellent form this season, having sent out 51 winners, so Supreme George is operating in a confident, well-resourced environment. That tells you he has not yet mastered that grade consistently — but given the form of the last few months and a trainer who clearly knows where he thrives, he looks likely to keep his rivals honest.
