Sunset Hill

That Kelso win remains the solitary career highlight, and it now sits 18 months in the past. Since then, Sunset Hill has gone six races without finding the winner's enclosure, though the recent form is at least showing some life — a second and a third in the last four completed runs suggests the horse is competitive, just not quite good enough to get to the front when it matters. There's a horse here that can mix it with others at its level, but consistently finishing just behind the winner is its own kind of frustrating pattern.

The partnership with jockey Nathan Moscrop is worth noting, if only to illustrate the challenge. Together they've raced 17 times and won once — that's roughly 1 in every 17 rides together. Moscrop clearly knows this horse well, but familiarity hasn't yet unlocked any extra magic. In the class of races Sunset Hill typically enters, the record is even starker: nine races at that level and not a single win to show for it.

What keeps the story interesting is the yard behind it. Susan Corbett has sent out 11 winners this season, which shows this is a functioning, competitive operation that knows how to get horses to win. Sunset Hill, raced just yesterday and still very much in active training, hasn't been given up on. Corbett is clearly patient with this horse, and patience in racing is sometimes the thing that eventually pays off. Whether Sunset Hill has another Kelso moment in it somewhere down the line is the open question — but for now, it remains a horse that competes honestly, places regularly, and wins almost never.
