Summerson

The figures tell an interesting story. Over longer distances—around a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs—Summerson has won one of three races, a 33% win rate that hints at a preference for a bit of ground to work with. That win came two months ago, and the subsequent form has been patchy: sixth most recently, then fourth, then first, then fourth again. It is the kind of inconsistency you see in young horses still learning their trade, which makes the decision to keep running them important. Roger Varian's Newmarket yard, which has already sent out 87 winners this season, clearly believes there is something worth developing here. With only 20% of its races converted into wins so far—one victory in five attempts—Summerson is still very much a work in progress, but the recent run yesterday keeps it active and in the conversation.
