That said, her recent form is not without some encouragement. Looking at her last six races, she has finished second, third, and fifth in among those runs, so she is mixing some decent efforts with the occasional poor one. A second and a third suggest she is competitive enough to be in the shake-up, just not quite able to convert. Whether that changes anytime soon is the question, because a horse that has placed without winning across 13 races is developing a habit that can be hard to break.
Summer Evening is trained by David Flood, whose small yard is based in Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswolds. With just two winners sent out this season, it is a modest operation, and a horse like this — capable of placing but not winning — reflects the quiet, grinding reality of racing at its lower levels. She raced as recently as today, so the yard are clearly keeping her busy and looking for the right opportunity. The win has not come yet, but they have not given up looking for it.
