Stoneacre competes almost exclusively at Class 6, the lowest tier of British racing, and has still not managed a win from nine races at that level. That is significant because Class 6 is where horses come to find opportunities — the fields are weaker, the competition more forgiving. Going winless at that level over such a long stretch is a tough pill to swallow.
Regular partner Dale Swift has been aboard for five of those attempts without getting near the winner's enclosure, and trainer Scott Dixon — whose yard at Rolleston in Nottinghamshire has sent out 33 winners this season, so clearly knows how to get a horse to the track in good shape — has yet to find the key that unlocks this one. The contrast is striking: a trainer in fine form, a horse that simply has not fired.
At six years old with 14 races behind it, time is not exactly on Stoneacre's side. But the fact that it raced just yesterday suggests nobody has given up yet, and sometimes that one moment is all it takes.
