Stily

The recent run of form tells a familiar story. Going back through the last six races, Stily has finished eighth, fifth, and sixth before picking up back-to-back third-place finishes and then a second most recently. Read that in the right order — second and two thirds in its last three outings — and there's actually something to work with there. The horse is coming into form, or at least finding its way back to the places, which makes the four-month break since its last race an interesting moment. Has the yard used that time to find a race it can win, or is Stily simply one of those horses that finds a way to finish just shy of the winning margin every time?

Jockey Sean O'Keeffe has been the regular partner, riding Stily in eight of those fourteen races without managing a win between them. That's a clean zero from eight together — a combination that clearly has a good understanding of how to finish second and third, but hasn't yet cracked the code for first. That said, O'Keeffe is presumably still the likely booking when Stily returns, so if the breakthrough is coming, it'll probably come with him in the saddle.

The trainer is Michael J McDonagh, operating out of Shannon in County Clare. It's a yard that has sent out five winners already this season, so the horses are running well enough — Stily just hasn't been one of them yet. McDonagh will know this horse's quirks better than anyone, and returning from a break is sometimes the moment a trainer targets deliberately, picking a spot where conditions suit and hoping for a change of luck. Whether Stily delivers that first win or adds to its growing collection of near-misses remains to be seen, but at five years old, the clock isn't quite ticking yet.
