The recent form figures — 4, 5, 4, 7, 6 in its last five completed races — tell a consistent story, just not the one the yard would want. Steel Fixer tends to finish in the mid-pack, close enough to suggest it is competitive to a degree, but not close enough to threaten the horses that matter at the finish. A seventh-place finish in there is a low point, but the fourth-place efforts show it is not being left behind entirely.
Ben Robinson has been the regular jockey, partnering Steel Fixer in five of its eight races without managing a win. That said, the relationship between a young horse and a regular rider does sometimes click into place, and the fact the partnership has been maintained suggests there is still belief in the camp.
The trainer is Brian Ellison, who operates out of Norton in North Yorkshire. Ellison's yard has been in fine form this season, sending out 43 winners — so this is clearly an operation that knows how to win races. Steel Fixer has not yet reflected that, but being trained by a yard firing on all cylinders at least means the horse is in an environment where things can turn around. Steel Fixer raced just one day ago, so it is very much in the thick of its campaign right now. Whether a first win is just around the corner remains to be seen, but the horse is young, active, and with a trainer who clearly knows what he is doing.
