The recent form makes for difficult reading. A third place six runs back offered a brief flicker of promise, but either side of that the numbers tell a story of a horse that is finding life hard — finishing fifth, ninth, ninth, and as far back as fifteenth. Racing just yesterday, so clearly still considered worth persevering with, Staywitherjohnny remains a work in progress at best.
It is trained by Ciaran Murphy out of Mullingar in County Westmeath, and the yard is having a productive season with 18 winners on the board — so this is not a struggling operation. That context matters, because it suggests the horse is getting every opportunity to show what it can do. So far, it simply has not taken those opportunities. Some horses take time to click, and a yard with Murphy's current form is presumably patient enough to keep looking for the right spot. But with nine races now in the book and no wins to show, Staywitherjohnny needs to find something soon.
