Staton is a five-year-old having his first crack at competitive racing. He made his debut just a day ago and finished eleventh — a tough introduction, but entirely normal for a horse stepping out for the first time. With only the one race under his belt, there is little to go on beyond that single outing.
Paul Traynor's yard at Templepatrick has found the winner's circle once already this season, so Staton will have the benefit of a trainer who knows how to get horses ready for the track. Whether he improves significantly from that debut run, or whether racing simply isn't his game, the next few weeks should tell us far more than a single eleventh-place finish ever could.
