Craig Lidster's yard at Norton, in North Yorkshire, has sent out 20 winners this season, so State of Gold is in a stable that knows how to get horses home. The fact that the horse is still racing regularly and was out just a day ago shows the trainer sees enough in it to keep it active, which usually means Lidster expects improvement rather than hoping to scrape by.

The recent form dips and climbs in an unpredictable way — a ninth-place finish followed by another ninth, then a solid third, then second, then seventh and fifth — but for a two-year-old this is normal. Young horses often run hot and cold as they learn what racing demands. The key is that State of Gold has already shown it can win, and has shown it can place consistently. If the next few races bring another win or two, this could be a horse worth following.
