Star Vantage

The places tell a partial story. Nine times from 38 races, Star Vantage has finished close enough to matter — second, third, or fourth — without ever getting its nose in front. The recent form confirms this pattern with uncomfortable clarity: the last six runs have produced finishes of second, fourth, fifth, fourth, fourth, and fourth. Competitive enough to be in the mix, not quite able to seal the deal. At Class 5, the lowest tier of British racing, these are races specifically designed to give horses like Star Vantage a chance to win. And yet, across 24 races at that level, the score remains 0 from 24. That is a long time to be knocking on a door that never opens.

Jonathon Bewley has partnered the horse nine times without a winner between them, which at least suggests the yard has faith in the combination, even if results have not followed. Trainer Rebecca Menzies, based in Morden, Durham, is clearly no stranger to winners — her yard has sent out 36 of them this season alone, so she knows what a winning horse looks like. Star Vantage, at this point, simply is not one of them.

What keeps this interesting, in a bittersweet sort of way, is that Star Vantage has not been pulled up or written off. It raced yesterday. At nine years old, with a blank win record, it is still out there competing every few weeks. For some horses, a career is measured in prize money and trophies. For Star Vantage, it seems to be measured in something harder to quantify — showing up, finishing, and going again. Whether a first win ever arrives is genuinely unclear, but the horse has made a career out of proving it belongs on a racecourse, even if winning on one remains the one thing it has never managed to do.
