Trainer Gemma Tutty, who runs her yard at Osmotherley in North Yorkshire, has been waiting for the rain to come. Tutty spotted something in Star Cast's pedigree that suggested she wanted a longer distance, and the plan has been to give her room to stretch out once the ground softened. That patience seems to be paying off. At distances between 1m3f and 1m4f — roughly two and a quarter miles — Star Cast truly excels, winning five of her thirteen races at those trips, a rate of nearly 4 in every 10 attempts.

Her most recent form shows real momentum. In her last six races she has won three times, most recently at Ayr eight weeks ago, and the 2-1-1 sequence at the start of that run suggests she is hitting her best stride. But there is a ceiling: she has never won in eight attempts at the very top level of racing, which means the best races in Britain remain beyond her reach. For a horse of her calibre, those Class 5 races — the bread and butter of lower-level racing — are where she belongs, and where she thrives.

Star Cast raced just a day ago and is still very much active, which means Tutty will be watching the weather forecast closely. When the wet ground returns, and when the distance is right, this is a horse who knows how to win.
