The first thing worth knowing is what happens when the ground gets wet. On soft, muddy ground, Sphagnum has won 2 of just 6 races — that is 1 in every 3, more than twice the career average. For a horse that wins roughly once every seven attempts overall, that jump in performance is not a coincidence. It is a horse that genuinely comes alive when conditions suit, and any time rain is in the forecast, Sphagnum becomes a far more compelling prospect than the bare numbers suggest.

Then there is Downpatrick. Sphagnum has raced there just three times and won twice — a 67% win rate at a single track. Winning 2 of 3 races anywhere is remarkable; doing it at the same course points to something specific, whether that is the layout, the undulations, or simply the way the track rides. Whatever the reason, Downpatrick has been very good to this horse, and that is the kind of stat a knowledgeable racegoer files away for future reference.

The partnership with jockey Dillon Maxwell is the most consistent thread running through the career. Together they have raced 24 times and won 3, a win rate of 12% — accounting for three of Sphagnum's five career victories in total. That level of familiarity between horse and rider matters more than people outside racing often realise.

The honest caveat is that form has been quiet lately. Sphagnum has not won since Cork in November 2024, now 21 months ago, and the last six races have produced nothing better than a second place. Trainer J P Broderick's yard has sent out just 2 winners this season, so this is not a stable in rampant form. But Sphagnum raced just one day ago and remains active. A nine-year-old with specific conditions it thrives in — wet ground, one particular track — is not finished. It just needs everything to align.
