Something Splendid

The two wins came nearly 13 months apart: first at Newmarket on 19 July 2025, then most recently at Great Yarmouth on 30 August 2026 — just a week ago. That Great Yarmouth victory is the more encouraging sign. It shows Something Splendid is still capable of winning after a long drought, and it arrived when the ground was soft enough to bring out the best in the horse. Trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam at Newmarket, Something Splendid competes mostly in lower-tier races, which is where a horse winning 1 in 6 attempts naturally belongs. Recent form has been patchy: from the last six races, there's a win, a place, and little else of note — 6th, 1st, 7th, 9th, 4th, and 11th. That suggests the Great Yarmouth success may have been a one-off flash of form rather than the start of something sustained.

The real clue to Something Splendid's future lies in ground conditions and race distance. It performs best at 1 mile 3 furlongs to 1 mile 4 furlongs, though even at those distances it has won only twice from eight races. Wait for soft or heavy ground on a suitable course, and this horse's chances improve dramatically. On firm, dry ground it is essentially just another mid-field runner, but on a wet day at the right distance, Something Splendid becomes genuinely dangerous.
