Some Scope

The other sweet spot is Doncaster. Two wins from four races there is a remarkable conversion rate for any horse at any level, and it's no coincidence that trainer Richard Hobson pointed the horse north last winter with that track firmly in mind. After a disappointing run at Cheltenham in autumn 2024 — later explained by a couple of issues that came to light afterwards — the yard switched to a northern campaign. It worked perfectly. Some Scope won at Doncaster in late December 2025, his most recent victory, and Hobson noted afterwards that fitting visors had sharpened him up after the horse had been, as he put it, "taking the mickey a little bit." That kind of honesty from a trainer is refreshing, and it tells you something useful: this is a talented horse who needs to be kept interested.

His biggest career moment so far came at Wetherby on Boxing Day 2024, when he landed a Class 1 race — one of the top prizes in British racing. Hobson described him as jumping for fun, "like an old handicapper," meaning he's experienced, confident, and almost relaxed about the whole business. That's a rare quality. The curious tension in Some Scope's record is that despite winning at the very top level, he has drawn a blank in 7 races at Class 2 — the level just below. Horses don't always perform in a neat hierarchy, and Some Scope is a good example of that oddity.

Gavin Sheehan has ridden him in 9 of his 23 races and won 3 of them — a 33% win rate together, which is excellent by any measure. Richard Hobson trains out of Little Rissington in Gloucestershire and has sent out 9 winners this season. With the Edinburgh National mentioned as a potential target and Some Scope having raced just one day ago, this is clearly a yard keeping their options open — and a horse who rewards patience when the ground, the course, and the headgear all align.
