Trained by Claire O'Connell at her yard in Ashbourne, Co Meath, Smart Sioux raced just yesterday, which at least confirms the team are still actively trying to find the right opportunity. O'Connell's yard has sent out four winners this season, so there is clearly ability in the string — Smart Sioux just hasn't managed to tap into any of its own yet. At three years old there is still time, but the clock isn't standing still either.
What makes a horse like this worth watching? Honestly, the curiosity. Every runner with a blank record is one race away from a first win, and when it comes — if it comes — it tends to arrive as a surprise to everyone except perhaps the trainer. For now, Smart Sioux is a work in progress, and the most interesting chapter of its story is still to be written.
