Small Bucks

The horse has a clear preference for normal ground conditions. On fast, dry surfaces, Small Bucks thrives—it has won 3 of 14 races on that going, a 21 percent win rate that is nearly double its overall average. Softer or wetter conditions seem to blunt its edge, so future races on firm ground should be marked as promising opportunities. Trainer P E Collins, based at Bessbrook in County Down, has a small but functional yard and will no doubt be plotting for those firm-ground opportunities.

The most recent win, at Tramore just three weeks ago, looks particularly encouraging. Small Bucks had finished eighth at its previous outing before that breakthrough, suggesting it can bounce back quickly from disappointment—a useful trait in a horse still maturing. The pattern of recent form (8-8-1-14-1-10, reading from most recent back) is choppy rather than disastrous, and the two wins tucked in there show the horse is capable of delivering on the day. Still raced yesterday, Small Bucks remains active and busy, which at least keeps opportunities coming.

One niggle: the regular partnership with Patrick M O'Brien hasn't yielded results. Five rides together, no wins—though this may simply reflect bad luck or unsuitable race choices rather than any fundamental incompatibility. The bottom line is this: Small Bucks is an honest, midfield type that will keep running and occasionally winning. On firm ground, back it. On soft ground, look elsewhere.
