Smackwater Jack

His most recent win came eight weeks ago at Punchestown in early June, and he has been active since, racing just days ago. His form line over the last six runs shows the inconsistency typical of an older horse without a huge win rate—a ninth-place finish followed by a second, then a third, a first, another ninth, and most recently another outing—but the presence of that recent second-place finish suggests he is still competitive. Ridden most often by E Walsh, the pair have a 20 per cent win rate together (one win from five races), better than his overall record, though it is still a small sample.

Trained by Mrs Denise Foster at Longwood in County Meath, Smackwater Jack represents a yard sending out winners regularly this season. The plan, articulated some years back when he was making his comeback over fences after an eighteen-month absence, was to develop him into a staying chaser—the kind of horse that finds his rhythm in longer races on testing ground. Whether that vision has fully materialised is debatable given the modest win tally, but his affinity for Punchestown in the wet suggests he has carved out a niche. At an age when many horses have long since retired, Smackwater Jack is still getting his chances, still occasionally finding the winner's enclosure, and still showing up on race days. That matters.
