The key to understanding Sixpack is understanding his preference for fast, dry ground. On such conditions he wins nearly three times out of every four races he runs—3 wins from 4 attempts, a 75% win rate that stands out sharply against his overall record. When the ground turns soft or heavy, he is far less effective, which tells you everything about where his strengths lie. Trainer James Owen, based at Newmarket, bought him from Johnny Murtagh and clearly believes there is more to come. Owen has indicated he plans to step Sixpack up into nicer Saturday staying races for new owners, and is considering jumping with him down the line, suggesting he sees genuine potential in the horse rather than viewing him as a one-dimensional handicapper.

Ben Coen has been his regular rider, though the partnership has won only 1 of 9 races together—a modest return that hints Sixpack may not always be getting the perfect ride. When things do go right, though, they go right decisively. His last win came with a confident ride into a gap turning for home, and Coen noted afterward that the step up in trip had been crucial and that racing more often would only improve him further. For a horse still apparently learning his trade at six years old, that is an encouraging sign that better days may lie ahead.
