That sole win came at Newcastle in February, and the form since has been solid rather than spectacular: third, third, fifth, then a run of third and second in the most recent outings. Finishing second and third repeatedly is the kind of form that can feel frustrating, but it also tells you the horse is running consistently well and finding herself in the right races. The fifth is the one blip in an otherwise tidy recent sequence.
What gives real cause for optimism is the yard behind her. K R Burke, based at Coverham in North Yorkshire, has sent out 140 winners already this season — that is a training operation running at serious pace, and horses in that kind of form rarely end up in the wrong races by accident. When a stable is firing like that, you back their judgment on where to place a horse. Silky Lass raced just yesterday, so she is clearly fit and being kept busy — another sign the team believes there is more to come.
At three years old, she is still developing, and a horse who has placed in five of eight races while winning at 12% — roughly 1 in every 8 — has plenty of time to add to that tally.
