The recent form makes for mixed reading: two poor runs either side of that Clonmel victory, though the win itself stands out as a genuine bright spot in an otherwise inconsistent sequence.

Where Silent Guardian does start to look more interesting is over longer distances. In races run over two miles or more, the record sharpens up considerably — one win from six races at that trip, which is roughly 1 in every 6 attempts, or 17%. That is a meaningful improvement on the overall picture, and it suggests the horse has a genuine preference for being asked to stay. A trainer who keeps returning it to those conditions is clearly reading it the right way.

McCann's yard has sent out seven winners already this season, which shows it is in decent form and capable of finding the right spots for its horses. Silent Guardian's Clonmel win will have done plenty for confidence on both sides, and a horse that races this regularly — yesterday being the latest example — is clearly being kept busy for a reason. Whether another win comes soon depends on conditions suiting, but the long-distance form gives an honest reason to think it is capable of repeating the trick.
