The level Sheriffs Court operates at — Class 4, which sits in the middle of the racing ladder — suits it well enough, though the numbers are modest: one win from eight races at that level, or roughly one in every eight attempts. Recent form makes for tough reading, with finishing positions of eighth, eighth, and twelfth in three of its last six outings, and nothing to suggest an upturn is imminent. The horse hasn't won in its last six races, which means that Carlisle victory is starting to feel like a lone highlight rather than the beginning of something.
There is, at least, a respectable operation behind it. Sir Mark Prescott is one of the shrewder trainers in British racing, operating out of Newmarket — the sport's spiritual home in England — and his yard has sent out 49 winners this season alone, which shows the stable is very much in form. Whether Sheriffs Court can take advantage of that expertise and add to its tally after an 86-day break is the question. A rest can sometimes freshen a horse up and bring out the best in it. On current evidence, though, Sheriffs Court needs to find a bit of improvement to give its trainer another winner to add to that running total.
