Shabby made its racecourse debut just a day ago and finished seventh. At two years old, the horse is still finding its feet in racing, and a single run tells us almost nothing about its potential — plenty of good horses have modest first outings before improving sharply.
Michael Bell, who trains Shabby at Newmarket, has had an active season with 44 winners already, so the yard clearly knows how to get horses ready. Whether Shabby will develop into something useful remains to be seen, but a debut run is just the beginning of the story.
