The pattern of form shows a horse that is consistent without being unbeatable. In its last six races, Sea Of Rain has won once, finished fourth and third on two separate occasions, and picked up second-place finishes twice. That is the record of a horse punching above its weight some days and struggling to get going on others — normal for a young animal still learning the ropes. Trainer J S Bolger, who runs his yard at Coolcullen in County Carlow, clearly has the horse progressing in the right direction. Bolger's yard has already sent out eight winners this season, so the operation knows how to get the best out of its two-year-olds.

With two wins and five places from seven races, Sea Of Rain has the look of a horse with real potential. The speed of improvement over the last month and the fact that it has now won twice — including a victory just days ago — means this is one to watch closely over the autumn. For a juvenile still establishing itself, this is solid, promising form.
