What makes Scammer's situation a little puzzling is the yard it comes from. Gary and Josh Moore, training out of Lower Beeding in West Sussex, are no backstreet operation — they've sent out 99 winners already this season, which is a serious number. When a stable is firing at that rate, the horses in their care tend to have every opportunity to perform. Scammer, for whatever reason, hasn't taken those opportunities. It has run three times at Class 5 level — the lowest rung of British racing, where horses go specifically to find winnable races — and hasn't managed to get involved in a single one of them.
Raced just one day ago, this is a horse that's clearly being kept busy, which suggests the team still believes there's something to work with. Sometimes it takes time for a young horse to mature and find its feet. But six outings in and not even a placed finish to show for it, patience — and optimism — are being tested.
