Saxon Grace

The recent form makes for honest but sobering reading. Over the last six races, Saxon Grace has finished 10th, 4th, 6th, 4th, 7th, and 6th — a pattern that suggests a horse capable of running respectably in the middle of the pack but not yet finding whatever it takes to get to the front. Those two fourth-place finishes are at least a sign that the ability is somewhere in there; it just hasn't translated into a win from 13 attempts, which works out at 0 wins from every race Saxon Grace has entered.

The horse is trained by Daragh Bourke, whose yard is tucked away in Waterbeck in Dumfries and Galloway. Bourke's team has sent out 10 winners this season, which shows the yard knows how to get a horse to the front — making Saxon Grace something of an outlier rather than a reflection of the stable's overall form. Saxon Grace raced just yesterday, so this is very much a horse still in active campaigning, and at three years old there is at least the argument that time and experience could yet unlock something better.

Whether that improvement comes is the open question. For now, Saxon Grace is the kind of horse that keeps turning up, keeps running in the top half of the field often enough to suggest there is something there, but keeps leaving its the yard wondering when it is all going to click.
