More striking still is his stranglehold on Punchestown, where he has won 3 of his 8 races at that track. In a game where finding even one course where a horse runs well is valuable, Sandor Clegane has found his home track and uses it.

His last win, six months ago at Down Royal in April, came with jockey Eoin Staples aboard. The horse had been genuinely frustrating his the yard by the point — talented enough to run well but often hitting a wall before the finish — yet on the day, something clicked. He got into a rhythm, jumped with purpose, and stayed on properly when it mattered. Staples said afterwards that the horse was "more than due it" and that it might have been what he needed. Since then, though, Sandor Clegane has run six times without another win: a fourth, a third, a first in the top 3, then three well-beaten efforts that suggest he has not found that same rhythm again. His most recent outing was just yesterday, and his form is decidedly lukewarm.

Trainer Nolan sees races like the Coral Cup — the kind where a horse can get into a steady rhythm and stay all day — as ideal. In Class 1 or 2 races at the top level, Sandor Clegane has won nothing from three attempts, and that ceiling suggests he is a horse for strong handicaps and steady-paced affairs where his softground form and Punchestown prowess might count for more than pure class.
