On the face of it, the career numbers are modest. Two wins from 22 races, with 7 places in between, gives Sanditon a win rate of around 1 in every 11 outings. That is not a horse dominating its rivals. But there are layers to unpick. Both wins have come on normal, standard ground conditions — 2 from 14 races on that surface, which works out at 14%, or roughly 1 win in every 7 races. When the ground is right, Sanditon is a different proposition. When it is not, the results have tended to fall away.

The partnership with jockey Callum Shepherd is worth keeping an eye on. In five races together, they have won once — a 20% win rate, or 1 in every 5 rides. For context, that is a meaningfully better return than the overall career record suggests, hinting that Shepherd understands how to get the best out of this horse. The first career win came at Chelmsford in February 2026, and then this week's success at Wolverhampton followed — both all-weather tracks, both in normal conditions.

Johnston's yard is in serious form this season, having sent out 128 winners already. That kind of operation does not keep a horse in work without believing there is more to come. Most of Sanditon's races have come at Class 6, the entry level of British racing, where 1 win from 14 races at a 7% rate is unspectacular — but racing at that level consistently means the yard believe there is a race to be won there, not that the horse is running out of its depth. With a win just days ago and the yard firing, this is a horse worth watching if it lines up again soon on a similar surface.
