Sable Noir

A win rate of 1 in 3 races looks strong on paper, but for a horse this young and this early in its career, what matters more is whether it can do it again. The recent form chart — a win followed by two races without a victory — shows Sable Noir is still inconsistent, the sort of horse that can produce on the day but cannot yet be relied upon. It is trained by Kevin Ryan, whose Hambleton yard in North Yorkshire has had a strong season with 45 winners, so the horse is in a stable with the expertise to develop it properly.

The Musselburgh win this week gives the horse something real to work with. At two years old, Sable Noir is young enough that races like this are learning experiences. The question now is whether that victory was a sign of genuine ability or simply a good day — something the horse will answer in the races to come.
