Because this horse does not do ordinary races. Four of his seven wins have come in the top tier of British racing — Class 1 — and he has won those races at three of the most prestigious venues in the sport: Newmarket, Ascot, and Sandown Park. His record at Newmarket in particular stands out: 2 wins from just 3 visits, making him about as reliable there as a horse can be. Portman has noted that Rumstar seems a stronger, heavier horse than in previous years — physically, he is still developing, and his best may not be behind him.
His recent form tells the story of a horse that needs everything to fall right on the day. After a run of mixed results — a wide draw at Royal Ascot, an unhappy experience at Haydock, and a race at Sandown where he got to the front too soon — Portman made a deliberate tactical call last time out: hold him up, be patient, and trust jockey Rob Hornby to find the gap late. It was a risky plan at Sandown, where the opportunity to weave through traffic does not always materialise. Hornby found it anyway. Rumstar won. The two of them have now won 4 of their 16 races together — 25%, or 1 in every 4 — which is the kind of partnership that trainers and jockeys build quietly and then suddenly cannot imagine doing without.
What comes next is the most intriguing part of his story. Portman admitted that the Nunthorpe Stakes at York — one of Britain's most celebrated sprints — was never part of the original plan. The Prix de l'Abbaye in France was the target. But Rumstar is in good form, options are limited, and the yard is prepared to take a chance on the big occasion. Portman put it plainly: no one wins a Group 1 by staying cautious and waiting for a safer race. With 46 winners sent out by the yard this season alone, this is a trainer in excellent form — and Rumstar, it seems, is peaking at exactly the right time.
