The first came at Uttoxeter in late January, followed by a second at Newbury in early February — a sharp little purple patch that suggested Rubber Ball was hitting its stride at just the right moment. That Newbury win is worth noting: it's one of Britain's more prestigious tracks, and winning there is never a given. But that was 14 months ago now, and the horse hasn't managed to reproduce that form since, going winless across its last 6 races. The most recent run, 22 days ago, returned an eighth-place finish — not the kind of number that excites anyone.

One reason to stay interested is what happens when Rubber Ball races at a distance between a mile and six furlongs and two miles. In that range, the record reads 1 win from 3 races — roughly 1 in 3, which is genuinely strong. Many horses go their whole careers without finding a distance that suits them so clearly. Whether the yard can engineer more opportunities at that range could determine how the next chapter looks.

The partnership with jockey Jack Quinlan has produced both career wins, a 2-from-13 record that mirrors the overall picture — steady rather than spectacular, but clearly the combination that works best. Trainer Neil King, operating out of Wroughton in Wiltshire, has sent out 16 winners this season, so the yard is in decent form. The one nagging concern is Rubber Ball's record at Class 2 level — the upper tier of British racing. Four attempts, zero wins. That's the ceiling the horse keeps bumping its head against, and until something changes, it may be that slightly softer opportunities are where the next win is most likely to come.
