That debut second place is more promising than it might sound. Finishing runner-up first time out means the horse was competitive immediately, without the benefit of experience that more seasoned rivals carry into a race. Many horses need a run or two just to figure out what is being asked of them, so hitting the board straight away is an encouraging sign.
What gives Royal Fanfare a real platform to build on is the stable behind it. John and Thady Gosden, training together out of Newmarket in Suffolk, have sent out 135 winners already this season — that is a formidable operation by any measure, and one with a strong track record of developing young horses carefully and placing them well. When a yard of that calibre takes the time to get a horse to the track, there is usually a plan in place. Royal Fanfare is one to watch closely next time out.
