The breeding offers some indication of what to expect. Royal Ballet Blue is by Elzaam, a sire known for producing horses that tend to be sharp and quick to come to hand, which bodes reasonably well for a three-year-old making an early appearance. The dam's side comes through Battle Of Marengo, a stallion associated with stamina and soundness, so there is a suggestion that this horse may have a bit of substance to go with whatever speed it has inherited.
The trainer is Jack Foley, operating out of Bagenalstown in County Carlow. It is a small yard rather than a big factory operation, and with four winners already on the board this season, Foley is clearly having horses ready to run and run well. When a smaller yard sends a horse to its debut, it tends to mean they genuinely like what they have seen — there is little incentive to rush a horse to the track unless the home homework has been encouraging.
Royal Ballet Blue carries the intrigue that only a debut runner can. Everything is still to be discovered.
