The most recent win came at Dundalk in July 2024, which is now nearly two full years ago, and the last six races have produced nothing better than a placing. That recent form — finishing outside the top three in five of those six outings — suggests a horse that is finding it harder to land a telling blow. Still, the fact it raced just one day ago tells you the team still believes there is something worth running for.

The partnership with jockey Sorcha Woods has been given a fair chance — six rides together without a win — which is the kind of run that starts to raise questions, though it is worth noting the horse itself has not won in that same stretch, so this is not a jockey problem so much as a reflection of where Rough Diamond is right now.

Perhaps the most telling detail is its record at Class 5 level, which in British racing represents the lower end of the competitive ladder — races designed to give horses like this a winnable opportunity. Seven runs at that level, zero wins. That is not what you would expect from a horse being aimed at easier targets, and it suggests Rough Diamond is finding even those races competitive at this stage of its career. The first win came at Naas back in May 2022, and the horse has added three more since, so the ability has always been there in flashes. Right now, though, those flashes are coming less frequently, and the challenge for the yard is finding the right conditions to coax one more out of a horse that has clearly given plenty already.
