The headline moment came at Doncaster in November 2024, when he won a Class 1 race — one of the biggest days of his career so far. His trainer Jamie Osborne admitted afterwards that Room Service had surprised him by how well he handled the wet, muddy conditions, given that he moves like a horse built for fast, dry ground. He even ran green — a touch inexperienced — when he hit the front, which for a horse winning at the top level is more encouraging than alarming. It suggests there is still more to come. Doncaster also appears to suit him particularly well: two wins from just three visits there is a remarkable ratio at any track, let alone one that hosts some of the most competitive racing in the country.

The wet ground angle is worth dwelling on. Three wins from five races when conditions are soft or muddy — that is 60%, a brilliant conversion rate — and yet the trainer believes his long-term future may lie on faster ground. A horse who is already this effective in conditions that supposedly don't suit him has real room for improvement when everything falls right.

Jockey Tom Eaves has been along for most of the journey, riding him in 14 of his 16 races and winning 4 of them, around 1 in every 3.5 rides. That kind of consistent partnership matters — Eaves knows how this horse ticks. Osborne's yard at Upper Lambourn has been in fine form this season, sending out 48 winners, and Room Service, back in action just this week with a win at Newcastle, looks like one of the reasons why. Osborne has spoken about wanting to step him up in distance, feeling he is crying out for it, and if that move pays off, the best may genuinely be ahead of him.
