Brighton is a famously quirky track — a sharp, undulating circuit on the Sussex Downs that suits certain horses and baffles others entirely. The fact that Roman Spring has cracked it twice suggests a real affinity with the place, not just a lucky afternoon. The first career win came there on 8 July 2025, which tells you something: it took a long time to get off the mark, but when it finally happened, it happened on its favourite patch of turf.

Dry ground is the other key ingredient. On fast, dry conditions Roman Spring has won 2 of its 13 races — roughly 1 in every 6 — which is a significantly better return than its overall record suggests. Most of its racing life has been spent at Class 6 level, the entry-level tier of British racing, where it has picked up 3 wins from 25 races. That's a 12% win rate at that level, or about 1 in 8, which is perfectly respectable for a horse operating in competitive, closely-matched fields.

What makes the current moment worth watching is the recent form. After spending much of its career in the middle of the pack, Roman Spring has been knocking on the door — finishing third, third, and sixth in its last few outings before winning at Lingfield Park in November 2025. The most recent six results read 7-10-6-3-3-1, a sequence that shows a horse gradually moving forward through the field. That Lingfield win came seven months ago, and Roman Spring raced just yesterday, so the team at Liphook clearly believe there is more to come. Regular jockey Rhys Clutterbuck hasn't yet managed a win in seven rides together, but with the horse in this kind of form on suitable ground, that could easily change sooner than the bare numbers suggest.
