Cromwell himself has described Robbies Rock as a big, raw horse — the kind of animal that takes time to fill his frame and figure out what racing is actually about. That rawness hasn't stopped him performing, though. His career started to take shape with a first win at Navan in September 2024, and he followed that by running a huge race at Cheltenham, finishing second in the Fred Winter. Cromwell's post-race words were telling: the horse was flat out from start to finish, took the brave route through the field, and still found more when it mattered. That is exactly the kind of performance that separates horses who are merely consistent from horses who can compete at the highest level.
The best version of Robbies Rock comes over longer distances. At a mile and six furlongs to two miles, he has won 2 of his 8 races — 25%, or roughly 1 in 4 — which is meaningfully better than his overall rate of around 1 in 6. When the race tests his stamina, he responds. Gary Carroll, who has ridden him in 9 of his 18 races, has won twice on him together, a win rate of 22%, suggesting a genuine partnership has developed between horse and rider.
His most recent win came at The Curragh on the Flat in May 2025, but an injury picked up shortly afterwards has kept him on the sidelines since. Cromwell indicated in November that a return was weeks away, and Robbies Rock has now raced as recently as yesterday, so the comeback is clearly under way. His last six runs read as a win, two seconds, a fourth, an eighth and a fall or non-completion — a mixed but not discouraging sequence for a horse returning from a setback.
Cromwell's yard has sent out 97 winners this season, so this is a trainer who knows how to get a horse ready. With Robbies Rock apparently back in action and still described as a horse with room to improve, the most interesting chapters of this story may not yet have been written.
