Ringdufferin

That first win came at Downpatrick in September 2023, where jockey Jack Kennedy noted something telling after the race: Ringdufferin had taken the front early and simply refused to stop galloping. Nobody pushed him for the lead, but even if they had, Kennedy was confident his horse would have answered. That instinct to stay on and grind it out is the kind of trait that endears a horse to racing fans — he is not flashy, but he does not give up either. Within two weeks he followed up at Gowran Park, and trainer A.L.T. Moore, based in Naas, Co. Kildare, was bullish enough in October 2023 to float the idea of a trip to Cheltenham for a qualifier. For a horse of his level, that is serious ambition.

The problem is that was 34 months ago. Since that win at Gowran Park, Ringdufferin has gone through 6 races without troubling the winner's enclosure, and his recent form — a sixth, a second, an eighth, a fourth, a fourteenth, and a non-completion — is inconsistent at best. The second place is encouraging and shows he still has ability, but the fourteenth and the pulled-up run tell a different story. Moore's yard has sent out 3 winners this season, so the operation is ticking along, and Ringdufferin raced just yesterday, which at least confirms he is fit and active.

At eight years old and with that long gap since his last win, the honest read is that Ringdufferin is a horse searching for the right conditions to rediscover what he showed in that bright fortnight two autumns ago. He has placed 6 times from his 23 races, which means he shows up regularly enough — but showing up and winning are different things, and right now the winning feels like a distant memory.
