That breakthrough came at Kilbeggan two weeks ago, a moment that vindicated his trainer John C McConnell's patience. McConnell, based at Stamullen in County Meath and responsible for 36 winners this season, had wrestled with Rexem's temperament—particularly his tendency to get wound up when travelling to races. After a disappointing run at Cheltenham, McConnell recognized there was nothing physically wrong with the horse; the problem was between his ears. Rexem needed the right environment and the right circumstances. His jockey Ben Harvey, who has partnered him to three wins from ten races together (a 30 per cent success rate that stands out against his overall form), described him perfectly after that Kilbeggan victory: a stayer with a sharp finish, one who jumps well and does everything easily. Harvey noted too that Rexem won a point-to-point on firm ground and would likely prefer faster, drier ground to the softer surfaces he sometimes encounters.

Downpatrick is Rexem's spiritual home. He has won twice from five races there, a win rate that marks it out as a place where he thrives. Yet his record in better-class races remains a worry: zero wins from four attempts at the top level. At his current age and after so many races, Rexem appears to be a horse best suited to smaller-field, lesser contests where his jumping and finishing kick can shine. He is not destined for the very top, but with his recent win, sympathetic handling from McConnell, and the partnership with Harvey, he is finally performing to his level.
